Germ City:
Clean Hands, Healthy People

Washington State University's award winning Germ City is a traveling exhibit created by B. Susie Craig, Doris Torkelson, Kathy Schrift, and other Cooperative Extension faculty in western Washington to promote hand washing. Germ City has been taken to festivals, fairs, community events, and classrooms. Does it work? About 32,000 kids went through the exhibit at the Western Washington Fair in 1999. "While fair attendance in 1999 was roughly equal to 1998, soap usage doubled," said B. Susie Craig, WSU Cooperative Extension, Thurston County. That's what I call results!

What is Germ City?

The Germ City:  Clean Hands, Healthy People program is a real "hands-on" approach to handwashing education that teams education with a handicapped accessible, light-proof tunnel with ultraviolet lights.

Why Germ City?

Proper handwashing is the best way to prevent the spread of contagious infection.  Colds and flu, SARS, E. coli, MRSA - why take chances?  Learn and teach proper handwashing now to help prevent the spread of infectious diseases.  Germ City has a documented track record of changing handwashing behavior.

Where is Germ City?

Germ City is now in nearly half of the states in the US.  There is a likelihood of moving into Canada in the near future.

Who uses Germ City?

Germ City users include numerous universities, fairs, hospitals, health departments and other health care settings, elementary and middle schools, FDA, VA, food service, zoos, bio-terrorism training, emergency planning, and many others.
